Description
Patmos is considered to be the island of divine intervention. It is one of the most spirituals islands in all of the Aegean.
What you can expect to see in Patmos on this half day tour...
CHORA:
The Chora was built like a labyrinth to keep the pirates away. It is full of many nice houses and little souvenir/authentic shops. The Chora was also the home city of Emmanuel Xanthos, who was one of the founding members of the Society of Friends. This secret society served as a revolutionary organization during the Greek War of Independence.
MONASTERY OF ST. JOHN:
The monastery resembles a fort more than an actual monastery. It was established in 1088 AD, and is heavily influenced by Byzantine architecture. The monastery is home to a library, established by Agios Christodoulos and a museum located next to the bakery. The library includes 2,000 volumes, 13,000 historic documents and 900 manuscripts and 30 of these manuscripts were passed on to the monastery by Christodoulos? successor. Some other valuable icons that the monastery houses include Savens, the collection of Nikiforos Laodikias, works of ecclesiastic father codes, biographies of Saints and Aristotle?s Accusations. This monastery is a must for all those who visit the islands.
CAVE OF APOCALYPSE:
In 2006 this cave was declared to be a World Heritage site by UNESCO. This is the exact cave where St. John received the visions of the Revelations and wrote the last book of the bible. No photography is allowed and there are seven silver lamps hung in the cave. The largest on of these is above the place where St. John supposedly slept using a rock as a pillow that still exists in the cave. Today, a monk sits on the rock and tells the story of the Apocalypse and how the book was written.
PROFITIS ILIAS:
The highest point on the island offers the best view. 296 m above sea level, on a clear day visitors can see as far as Turkey. If visitors are up for a little climb, than this is a perfect destination to get a breathtaking view of the island and surroundings.
